GOTM - March 2007

Having just built Brandon and Ryan's "Death Sticks", I was inspired to build myself a "chopper" style gun. A spearfishing trip to Panama in March with Josh Gregory (Neptonic Systems) and Jeff Croci was the only excuse I needed to start working on this project.

The trip to Panama could yield anything from amberjack, to pargo, to tuna so I needed a versatile gun that would work well in all conditions. Carrying a 72" tuna gun and 60" gun with extra shafts was not going to be travel-friendly so a single gun between the two sizes was the order.

Having already built several 65" and 67" guns with either 4 or 5 bands (most with 11/32" shafts), I thought something in this size range would be the logical choice.

I settled on a 66.6" gun with 4 bands and a 66"x11/32" shaft.

Since I can load a 3-band gun fairly quickly, I figured the extra band needed to power the 11/32" shaft wouldn't take too much longer. This heavier caliber shaft would give me the confidence to knock down a large tuna, without being too much gun for smaller gamefish.

This 66.6" gun with 66" shaft not only created the perfect all-around bluewater gun, but also fitted the "Devil's Messenger" theme (Mori thought I was insane when I asked him to cut 2 shafts down from 67" to 66" and re-thread them!)

Red and black dyes were used on the Padauk stock to create the "from the charred depths of hell" look.
